'Brave New Beginnings'

Let's start with your first 10,000 words.

Opening pages of first drafts often demand the most work. If you can get your beginning working, you're over half way there.

That's why I created the 'Brave New Beginnings' inspired revision session.

'Brave New Beginnings'

This is no ordinary critique...

  • expanded awareness of your own potential and your story's needs.
  • freedom from overwhelm.

Here's what you'll get:

  • my eyes on your first 10,000 words so we can explore the ongoing evolution of your work together.
  • one hour Deep Dive session with me where we explore your story and consult your intuition.
  • insights and revelations about what your novel and your readers need.
  • a 'next steps' document giving you clarity about how to move forward with a visionary revision.

The Inspired Revision Process

Before, During and After

  • You complete a workbook about your challenges, your hopes, and your vision for the book.
I read your pages in whatever form they currently stand so that I can get an overview of where you are.
I send you a focused assessment of what I’m seeing and the questions we’ll explore when we meet, as well as comments directly on the pages.

  • You bring to the table your own sense, however fuzzy, of what you want your book to be, what you are trying to communicate.
  • I bring to the table a fresh perspective and big-picture analysis of the pages that I’ve read, curiosity about your vision for the book, unconditional respect for you as the author, and the ability to guide you towards clarity.
  • The book you will one day be proud to hold in your hands is most likely somewhere floating in the gap between what’s currently on the page and your deepest vision of what you hope to convey or evoke.
  • Our discussion is about THAT book, the one that is not quite on the page. Our discussion is a process of collaborative, creative, problem-solving,  in which we find strategies to get your story on the page and create the book you really want to write, the one that you are proud to put out into the world.
  • You’ll come away with a new sense of clarity about your book, buzzing with a renewed enthusiasm for what it could be and how to make it more of what it wants to be.
  • As one client said as he left my kitchen, clutching a notebook full of diagrams and plans for revision:  “this is gold dust.”
  • You’ll receive a next steps document which further processes our discussion and contains an account of our work together and targeted suggestions for how to move forwards.

"I was struggling to understand how to move from a first draft to a second without getting totally overwhelmed. Now I've worked with you I feel very, very excited about writing my book again! I feel like I've finally got that 'hook' that always seemed to be missing."

I work on novel length fiction. I like to work with writers who are reaching for the blend of the commercial and the literary. Within that definition I can work confidently within most genres. If I had to pick my favourite genres to work on they would probably be domestic suspense, women's fiction and 'book club' fiction.

I don't work on picture books because they are quite different from novels.

I don't work on erotic fiction because I don't read it.

You don't need to have made it all the way to the end of the first draft. If you've found you have lost momentum or got stuck mid draft, I would love to help.

I'm an Author Accelerator certified book coach and a published author of literary criticism. I have a first class degree and doctorate in English Literature from Oxford, and I've taught literary studies at many Universities.

My time tutoring at Oxford University, one to one, guides my exploratory approach to book coaching.

I engage in continuous professional development so that I can best serve you and your writing.

As a fellow writer I have empathy for your struggles and admiration for your bravery and persistence. And I know that for some of us, writing doesn't happen in a straight line, or through a linear process. It has to get messy.

This session will give you perspective about your opening 50 pages which will give you great insight into what you want to focus on for your next draft. If you would like to work with me while you revise, or get a more complete evaluation of your entire work in progress, I do offer revision coaching packages and a full manuscript evaluation. I also have a pitching programme for when you are ready to submit your manuscript to agents.

"It was quite a leap of faith to entrust a stranger with something so personal that had consumed so much of my time, but George was hugely empathetic and her advice was very empowering. Can't recommend George highly enough [...] her overview of not only my current novel but the next one, has changed everything for me. "
